The giant softshell turtle discovered in Quanzhou is not Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle

CBCGDF recently received the response from Wildlife Conservation Society herpetologist Dr. Steven Platt regarding the species of the giant softshell turtle discovered in Quanzhou, Fujian Province. We sent photos of this giant softshell turtle to the herpetologist and asked him to identify this individual as soon as we found out the information. As it turned out, this individual was Asiatic Giant Softshell Turtle (Amyda cartilaginea) and not Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle (Rafetus swinhoei). Dr. Platt encouraged the volunteers to keep looking for the Yangtze Giant Softshell Turtle, as “there is a very strong likelihood that there are a few survivors out there waiting to be discovered”! Dr. Platt also suggested that volunteers could send him pictures for identification if necessary, and he was willing to help in any way.
