[Editor’s note:] To commemorate the world’s captive panda, the 2019 Basi Cultural Forum was held in Fuzhou, east China’s Fujian Province recently.
Themed “Culture of Peace, shared by the World”, the forum aims to tell the world the legendary story of the giant panda Basi, to promote China’s traditional peaceful culture, to create a new public platform and to promote multicultural exchanges between nations.
About 200 Chinese and foreign representatives in the fields of public welfare, culture, science, and technology, and sports participated in the forum. They engaged in themed forum sessions on cross-cultural communications and cooperation and the global application of the Basi culture brand. The Basi Culture Declaration was also released at the forum.
The forum was organized by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Fujian Provincial People’s Government.
Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) was invited to the forum and delivered a keynote speech titled “Basi Culture and Biodiversity”.
Dr. Zhou’s speech included the following:
Why do people like Basi and why Basi culture come into being? Let’s look at it from a more macro perspective. This year, IPBES published a “Global Assessment” Report. This Report shows that one million species on the planet are facing extinction, which means that about one-sixth to one-fifth of the species on the planet are endangered.
Basi’ story is a typical case of human success in biodiversity conservation, and it is also a very rare case. Ecological Civilization is a civilization of a new era, and “Basi Culture” was conceived and developed in the context of such a new era. It represents a new kind of understanding of humanity’s renewal of nature, life, habitat and ecology.
The current background that humans face is that they need to move from the era of industrial civilization to the era of ecological civilization, and we must change our production and lifestyle because we are facing global challenges. No country or region can survive on its own and it is crucial to share a common global action.
Basi culture conveys friendship and peace, but also the harmony between man and nature, and the thought of ecological civilization. The Fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties of the United Nation’s Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD CoP15) will be held in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China in 2020. We must seize this opportunity to promote and spread the culture of Basi and promote the cause of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, protect the country’s strategic resources, promote the cause of green development, guarantee social economy and sustainable development, promote the construction of ecological civilization and the harmony between man and nature, and build a beautiful home for humanity.
