Zhou Jinfeng: There Are Generally Unscientific Aspects in Dredging Projects, Special Attention Should Be Paid to Biodiversity

Recently, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) held a research meeting on “Government of Urban Black and Odorous Water Body, and Biodiversity Conservation”. Members of relevant departments such as the Research Department, the Law Department, the General Department and the Publicity Department participated in the study.

The meeting discussed the cases of the multiple projects that the CBCGDF research department recently approached, such as the Rehabilitation Project of Huai River in Yuanshi County, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, Shenzhen Bay Channel Dredging Project, Beijing Nanyuan Dapaozi Restoration Project, Dredging project in the middle and lower reaches of Wuli River, Hulu Island, Liaoning Province, and there were detailed exchanges and discussions.

Dr. Zhou pointed out that from a national perspective, dredging projects are generally unscientific, mainly reflected in under the guidance of industrial civilization ideas, the biodiversity, including genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity is not paid enough attention. He believes that major projects, including the construction of hydropower, roads, airports, transportation, wind power and other projects will have some impact on the natural environment.

Some projects will cause significant damage to biodiversity. It is extremely important to avoid damage. Sometimes it is not necessary to destroy it. Retaining a pristine environment is of great significance to local birds, insects and other “indigenous peoples”.

The following is the main content of this research meeting, to share with readers.

In April this year, for the Huai River section of the Yuanshi County in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, we believe that the sandbar in the middle of the river should be retained so that the birds that fly back to their nests in the later period can continue to live. But the relevant departments were a little nervous at first, worried about our doubts about the project. After we put forward the proposal, the next day, the relevant departments re-decided, retained the sandbar, and established the sand martin protection area there, which is now named “Sand Martin Long Island” and became a tourist attraction for many people. Ground.

“I believe the big mistake in the current river dredging project is the excessive removal of silt and reeds. I once did an experiment, a glass pond, there is grass, but the water is very clear, impurities are also fixed down by water grass. To control black and odorous water body, there are two main forces, one is microorganism and the other is plant. For the treatment of black and odorous water body, we must consider leaving grass. Planting reeds in the project is different from leaving the reeds before the project. Planting reeds not only consumes capital and destroys the original ecological environment, but also may lead to destruction due to the introduction of unsuitable species. Therefore, we advocate nature, use local species, and give play to the principles of conservation and nature. “

Dr. Zhou also emphasized that if it is ecological governance, it is first necessary to study and find out what the microorganisms in the river are, to detect the silt and black and odorous water body, and to investigate the plants and microorganisms as soon as possible.

“There is also the problem of academic corruption in river dredging projects. For example, the falsification of the environmental assessment of the Shenzhen Bay Channel Dredging Project. Although the project has been withdrawn, there may be countless such incidents across the country. The difference is whether it has been exposed or reported. Most of these projects are based on industrial civilization. “

Regarding the serious problem of destruction of biodiversity existing in river dredging projects, Dr. Zhou said that to be precise, many nominal “ecological” projects are often not ecological. Now we have talked a lot about biodiversity, but we still know little about it. Everyone is talking about the climate crisis, but no one knows that the biodiversity crisis is as important as the climate crisis, and even more important.

We are flooding everywhere now, on the one hand, the reason is that the environment is destroyed, and biodiversity is lost. Many people do not know that biodiversity is the point.

This problem exists in the Beijing Nanyuan Dapaozi restoration project. In the design stage of the project, some experts said that it is possible to dig away the layers of soil above, transform the original environment and establish a brand-new wetland park. In its key area “Dapaozi”, more than 600 mu of buildings have been removed. “Growing grass and naturally growing grass are two concepts.”

Now it is known that many dredging projects have more or less problems, and they still practice the concept of industrial civilization.

From the perspective of natural science, the foundation of ecological civilization is the protection of biodiversity. Now is the time when the human environment has to be protected.

We hope that the dredging project of the middle and lower reaches of Wuli River on Hulu Island, and hope that they will make a little adjustment to make it become a model project, let everyone know that the treatment of black and odorous water body and these places need to be considered. Not only to intercept pollution, but also to do ecological preservation, so that grass can be left, silt can be left, and the original ecological environment should be kept as far as possible.
