What actions do China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) volunteers take to protect the ecological environment of rivers and aquatic life?
1. Clean up from the source, go down to the river and clean up illegal fishing gear.
2. Report illegal fishing. Once someone is found to be illegally fishing during the closed fishing season or in the prohibited fishing zone, immediately report to the fishery administration, agriculture and rural departments.
3. Supervise the aquatic products sold in the market. Once illegal catches are found, report them immediately.
4. Even if the fishing ban is over, it is still illegal to use ground cages and other tools to fish.
On July 22, 2020, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) volunteers of the Green Fields Protection Action team in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province carried out the 21st special operation during the “Songhua River Basin Ecological Defense War” during the fishing ban, and continued to patrol the Hulan River Basin.
Although the reeds on the shore are as high as a person, and the road conditions are difficult to walk, everyone has overcome the difficulties and cleared 101 illegal fishing gear such as ground cages, large spinners, hangers, fish tents, large baskets, and flower baskets. The length is about 4000 meters. A sandpiper and a young spotted duck trapped in a ground cage were rescued and released into the wild. Four dead bodies of waterfowl in the ground cage were found and harmlessly treated, including an adult mallard duck, an adult spot-billed duck, a juvenile spot-billed duck, and an adult Common Moorhen. Rescued a Brazilian red-eared turtle (it is a notorious alien species, do not put it back in the river), rescued and released various fish, shrimp, snails, loach, etc. about 300 jins.
Fishing with illegal fishing gear such as ground cages and large baskets harms not only the creatures in the water, but also the birds living in the waters.
During the patrol, the volunteers also found 80 goats grazed by river herders eating trees protecting the banks. Volunteers carried out ecological protection publicity to the sheepherders. They also hope that the government and functional departments can intervene in the large number of grazing cattle and sheep along the Songhua River from the perspective of protecting riverbank trees and protecting wetlands.
In the process of cleaning up illegal fishing gear, the volunteers received yellow warning messages of thunderstorms and strong winds. Strong winds, heavy rains and hail suddenly came, the operation was forced to stop, and the team returned in rain.
The actions of the volunteers of CBCGDF in Northeast China are very impressive and never disappoint. From May 2020 to the present, in just two months, they have carried out a total of 21 special operations during the fishing ban period, cleared thousands of illegal fishing gear, and proved that the volunteers are indispensable for the ecological protection of the Songhua River basin.
It’s hoped that environmental protection organizations and environmental protection volunteers across the country can learn from them and show their own action. Their actions to clean up illegal fishing gear and protect aquatic life and birds from the source are particularly exciting; They cooperate with functional departments and the media to maximize the possible leveraging of multi-party forces to jointly protect fisheries, which is also worth learning.
Because every action of the Harbin team will be united with the local functional departments, the subsequent actions such as confiscating illegal fishing gear, illegal fishing boats, and punishing illegal fishers will be directly taken over by the functional departments at the scene.
In addition to dropping directly into the water and cleaning up illegal fishing gear, the CBCGDF Northeastern volunteers can also adopt methods such as reporting and supervision to protect the fish. This is where they can do a lot.
