On September 9, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Research Department, International Affairs Department and other departments organized the second meeting on the implementation plan for the Lop Nur Biodiversity Scientific Expedition.
In the context of climate change and the warming and humidification of the climate in the northwestern region, can Lop Nur, the “sea of death”, restore its vitality in the future? Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, the Secretary-General of CBCGDF emphasized that this scientific expedition must adhere to the macro perspective of ecological civilization and sustainable development, with an interdisciplinary team lineup, focusing on three dimensions (recording, focusing on research on changes, and interventional experiments) to come down to earth to carry out various scientific investigations, make the research results provide basic scientific support for the assessment and management decision-making of China’s macro-scale ecological environment changes in the next few decades.
At this meeting, Dr. Lu Shanlong gave a detailed introduction on the overall membership structure of the four research teams, as well as the expected results of the investigation, monitoring and evaluation teams, and project budgets. The meeting discussed issues such as the allocation of members, the output form of scientific investigation results, and the allocation of funds.
This project is the first phase of CBCGDF’s “Lop Nur Biodiversity Survey and Monitoring (2020-2030)” large-scale scientific expedition project. According to the scientific expedition plan, the expedition team is expected to start the first phase of investigation and observation at the end of September this year. At that time, investigations and research will be conducted on biodiversity, the natural and humanistic background of the river basin in the planned area, collect samples of aquatic organisms, soil, desert plants, insects, microorganisms and genes, and carry out site selection of long-term field observation stations and regular observation points.
