From the first renaming of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) after China’s accession to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, to the letter from Dr. Christina Pascal Palmer, executive secretary of CBD, inviting CBCGDF to participate in the 2018 United Nations Conference on biological diversity, and then to the invitation of CBD COP15 this year. There are many stories about CBCGDF and CBD, with rich details.
With the opening of the first phase of CBD COP15 conference in Yunnan, this paper will first describe the main context of the close relationship between the CBCGDF and CBD. There are a large number of CBD related communication; Continuous communication, practice sharing and concept discussion with experts in the field of biodiversity, international scholars and ecological and environmental protection institutions at home and abroad. There is also the continuous promotion of science popularization and mainstreaming of biodiversity, and CBCGDF media is also making continuous contributions.
CBCGDF and CBD COP15
At present, the online and offline registration of the delegation of CBCGDF has been gradually implemented. At that time, three members will go to the Kunming venue to participate in the meeting in mid-October. At the same time, several members will attend the meeting online.
Echoing the warm atmosphere of the upcoming conference, the CBD COP15 theme publicity series activities are also being carried out in an orderly manner.
·On September 28, focusing on the problems existing in the management, protection, development and utilization of wetland ecosystem, the scientific management seminar on Greening wetland was held online. Wetland is an important part of ecosystem diversity in biodiversity, which is closely related to bird migration, aquatic organisms, water source guarantee, coastal ecological security and so on.
On September 30, the CBCGDF Lecture Hall on Ecological Civilization – CBD COP15 theme publicity activity entered Beijing No. 57 middle school, which brought a wonderful lecture in the field of biodiversity to more than 600 students in grade two. The students also drew wonderful ink paintings for CBD COP15, and expressed their good expectations for biodiversity through poetry reading.
In addition, CBCGDF has also made many preparations for participating in and disseminating the COP15 conference, including recommending to the executive secretary of CBD that ecological civilization be included in the theme of the conference, and putting forward reference suggestions for the green preparation of the conference from the perspective of good food in combination with the CBCGDF index (now revised and renamed as the CBCGDF Standard in the Second Edition). At the same time, he was widely interviewed by the media and spoke actively.
CBCGDF and CBD COP14
In 2018, the United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity and the 14th Conference of the parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP14) was held in Egypt.
At the conference of the parties, governments agreed to accelerate action to achieve Aichi’s biodiversity target by 2020; And agreed on a comprehensive and participatory process for the development of a post-2020 global biodiversity framework; The conference launched “for nature and people – from Sharm el Sheikh to Beijing action agenda” to mobilize more stakeholders.
During the conference, CBCGDF, together with the Nature Conservation Association, the World Wide Fund for nature and the Asian Development Bank, co-hosted and presided over the conference’s parallel Forum on sustainable infrastructure.
At the same time, the photo exhibition held by CBCGDF at the 10th Conference of the parties to the United Nations Convention on biological diversity (CBD) (COP 14) in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, was successfully carried out. The carefully selected 20 representative ecological photography works show the beauty of nature and the diversity of ecological species, which were very popular during the conference.
CBCGDF and CBD COP13
At the conference of the parties held in Mexico in 2016, China successfully won the right to host the 15th Conference of the parties in 2020 (that is, CBD COP15, which will be held in Kunming, attracting attention at home and abroad), which is also the first time that China has hosted the conference.
On CBD COP13, Alice Hughes (now Deputy Secretary General of CBCGDF attended the meeting on behalf of CBCGDF. In an interview with the people’s daily, Alice said that China’s establishment of an ecological red line is one of the earliest relevant policies in the world, which is very innovative and worthy of reference by other countries in the world.
During the conference, Erik Solheim, Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations and executive director of UNEP, visited China and inspected biodiversity conservation. He highly praised China’s efforts and said that “if the United States, Mexico and China cooperate together, great progress will be made in biodiversity conservation, just like the Paris Agreement already reached Like that.
Renamed due to China’s accession to CBD
CBCGDF was established to welcome the return of Père David’s deer. This is a great attempt to restore the biological population. In May 1985, with the deepening of Sino British diplomatic relations, marquis TAVIS toke, the owner of the UK Wubang Temple manor, proposed to return the 38 Père David’s deer maintained in the manor to China as a symbol of friendship between the two countries. By 1993, 38 elks originally reintroduced back to China had been bred to more than 200, and successfully released for the first time in the old Yangtze River Road in Shishou, Hubei Province. The Père David’s deer Reintroduction project has become an example of species reintroduction in the world.
With the successful completion of its mission at the beginning of its establishment, what will be the follow-up development direction of the foundation? In 1992, CBCGDF ushered in the second important development stage. That year, China officially signed and acceded to the Convention on biological diversity. The Foundation believes that expanding the protection of a single species to the protection of overall biodiversity is more conducive to promoting China’s comprehensive integration with the world. Therefore, under the instructions of then Vice Premier Wen Jiabao, in 1997, CBCGDF was renamed “China Biodiversity Protection Foundation” for the first time, and began to be called ecosystem diversity, species diversity The course of striving for the protection of genetic diversity. This also laid the foundation for the close relationship between CBCGDF and CBD COP series.
