On November 2, 2021, Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), and Ma Yong, Deputy Secretary-General of CBCGDF discussed with a company and consulting firm on how Chinese companies can protect the local ecological environment and biodiversity when carrying out projects overseas.
Zhou Jinfeng first introduced a series of environmental protection work done by CBCGDF in China. It has made targeted criticism and suggestions to many large enterprises for their wrongdoings in environmental protection and promoted the resolution of related issues. In foreign countries, CBCGDF also actively communicates with local governments and social organizations, helping Chinese authorities to cooperate with local governments on environmental and biodiversity conservation. Zhou Jinfeng also suggested that the work done by CBCGDF since its establishment has created a certain international influence, and that there are many friends in the international community who can help companies with communication and consultation.
Dr. Zhou also mentioned that CBCGDF has been collecting failure cases of Chinese companies in international projects (EBRS – Ecological Belt and Roads), hoping that Chinese companies can learn from the failures, and pay attention to environment and biodiversity conservation when developing local resources. Zhou Jinfeng said he is glad to see that the public awareness of environmental protection is increasing in China, and as the society is paying more and more attention to environmental protection, the people’s concept is changing, too. In contrast, the environmental awareness of enterprises is lagging behind, but now they are catching up. CBCGDF is willing to help enterprises to liaise with international agencies and expects international experts to give specific advice to better protect the local ecological environment and biodiversity in African countries.
