CBCGDF Volunteers Reports: Tidal Flats Wetlands of Songhua River Threatened by Human Destruction in Harbin City During the Fishing Ban Period

Since the first day of the fishing ban on May 16, 2024, volunteers from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) in Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province have continuously organized patrols along the Songhua River during the fishing ban period. As of May 31, 2024, the patrol lasted for 16 days, passing through Zhaoyuan County, Daqing City, Daoli District, Daowai District, Songbei District, Hulan District of Harbin City to the tidal flats wetlands in the center of Dadingzi River.

On April 15, 2024, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Heilongjiang Province issued the “Notice on the 2024 Fishing Ban in Heilongjiang Province“. The notice pointed out that in light of the actual situation in Heilongjiang Province, a fishing ban system will be implemented throughout the province, requiring fish and other aquatic organisms to be banned in the main streams of the Nenjiang River and Songhua River and their tributaries, reservoirs, lakes, and water bubbles for 77 days, from 12:00 on May 16 to 12:00 on July 31.

During the patrol, CBCGDF volunteers found that there were a lot of human activities on the wetlands along the Songhua River, such as picking up bird eggs, raising chickens and cattle, grazing, and even privately built shacks. According to preliminary statistics from volunteers, there are no less than 100 privately built shacks along the way. There are many ground cage nets and gown nets in the Songhua River. These illegal nets contain hundreds of kilograms of fish caught.

In addition, CBCGDF volunteers also found that many trees and shrubs were cut down on the wetlands in the center of the river in Daowai District and Songbei District, leaving a large number of stumps.
