A Newly Recorded Rare Species, Thismia tentaculata Discovered in Wuzhishan Mountain, Hainan Province | CBCGDF Media Reports

Recently, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Media noticed that a newly recorded species was discovered in the Wuzhishan Mountain area of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park. After identification by the research team of Hainan University, it was determined that the species was the Thismia tentaculata.

The Thismia tentaculata is an annual saprophyte that grows underground for most of the year. It will only bloom and bear fruit after heavy rains. The flowering period is extremely short, only about a week. Saprophytes generally refer to non-green plants that obtain nutrients from dead organisms. Unlike ordinary plants, they cannot photosynthesize and need to rely on other organisms (such as corpses, animal tissues or withered plants) to obtain nutrients. They mainly establish a symbiotic relationship with fungi and use fungal hyphae to absorb nutrients from the surrounding soil to obtain growth energy.

It is reported that the Thismia tentaculata was first discovered in Vietnam in 2007 and was also found in Hong Kong, China in 2008. The total number of plants in the two places does not exceed 50. And because of its characteristics as a saprophyte, it has extremely high requirements for the environment and climate, and its short life cycle makes it difficult to be discovered.
