CBCGDF Media Reports: Thuja sutchuenensis, a National First-Class Protected Plant, RecentlyDiscovered in Chongqing, Once Thought to Be Extinct in the Wild

Recently, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Media paid attention to the fact that the Dabashan National Nature Reserve Management Affairs Center and the Southwest University Survey Team discovered a large-scale concentrated distribution area of wild Thuja sutchuenensis in Chengkou County, Chongqing City when conducting a local resource investigation. According to their preliminary estimates, there are more than 60 wild Thuja sutchuenensis populations in the area, with a number of more than 5,000 plants, and the overall condition of the area is good.

Thuja sutchuenensis, also known as Sichuan cypress and thuja tree, is a plant of the genus Thuja sutchuenensis of the Cupressaceae family. It is a national first-class protected plant and an extremely endangered species. After 1892, no traces of it were found in China for a time. The first volume of the “Chinas Plant Red Book: Rare and Endangered Plants” defined it as an extinct species in the wild. In August 1999, the “Chongqing National Key Protected Wild Plants Backbone Survey Team” rediscovered Thuja sutchuenensis during an investigation in Chengkou. In 2003, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) rated it as an extremely endangered species. In 2021, China’s revised “National Key Protected Wild Plant List” listed Thuja sutchuenensis as a national first-class protected wild plant.

In recent years, with the continuous deepening of protection and research, some species that were originally declared extinct in the wild have been rediscovered. This is a strong proof that the regional ecological environment continues to improve, but CBCGDF believes that it is also necessary to reduce excessive intervention in the wild ecological environment, let nature return to nature, and believes that the natural ecosystem has its nearly perfect self-repair ability. Reducing unnecessary human intervention is the best protection for wild species.
