CBCGDF’s Human-Wildlife Conflict Working Group Convenes Inaugural Meeting: Mitigating Human-Wildlife Conflict, Preserving Biodiversity

Human-wildlife conflict (HWC) is a complex social issue that arises from the intersection of human activities and the survival environments of wild animals. This conflict manifests in various regions worldwide, particularly in areas where human settlements overlap with wildlife habitats. HWC has emerged as a primary threat to the long-term survival of some of the world’s most iconic species. This issue encompasses both development and humanitarian concerns, as well as species conservation. If left unaddressed, HWC can severely hinder the progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In June 2024, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation, also known as CBCGDF, formally established the Human-Wildlife Conflict Working Group to thoroughly investigate the types and detrimental impacts of HWC, explore solutions, and promote harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of building an Earth Community of Life.

The inaugural meeting of the CBCGDF Human-Wildlife Conflict Working Group was held on June 19, 2024. Dr. Wang Haibin, Director of the CBCGDF Wild Species Sustainable Management Professional Committee, presided over the meeting. Discussions centered on the causes, types, and detrimental impacts of HWC, as well as potential solutions. The meeting outlined a comprehensive work plan, including a thorough investigation of HWC, the development of educational brochures, the establishment of a legal consultation platform, and the formulation of policy recommendations.

Mitigating HWC is crucial for effective biodiversity conservation and achieving harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Addressing HWC requires multifaceted efforts and sustained commitment. Only through concerted societal efforts can we achieve true harmony between humans and nature.
