Recently, volunteers from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) in Jilin Province carried out fishing protection work in the Songhua River waters within Songyuan City and found that illegal fishing was very serious. In just three days, they cleared more than 100 illegal nets such as ground traps in the more than 20 kilometers of river they patrolled.
The volunteers who participated in the activity learned from the locals that the Songhua River near Fenghua Village, Beijiang, Songyuan City is a gathering place for illegal fishermen. These illegal fishermen ignore the fishing ban and blatantly use ground cage nets and hanging nets to fish during the day. At night, some fishermen use fishing boats and electric fishing tools to fish. In this way, a fisherman can catch nearly 1,000 kilograms of fish a day.
After several days of patrolling, it was found that illegal fishing in the waters of Songyuan City was very serious. The Songhua River is a tributary of the Heilongjiang River and the third largest river in my country after the Yangtze River and the Yellow River. Its importance is self-evident. The volunteers hope that the local competent authorities can do a good job in water management during the fishing ban period, strengthen river patrols in Songyuan City, crack down on illegal fishing, and give the local Songhua River basin a chance to recuperate.
