CMS COP14, CBCGDF side event on Ecological Connectivity & Mergus squamatus, Included in the Biology Exam of Middle School in China

Recently, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) noticed that biodiversity conservation knowledge, such as CMS COP14, CBCGDF side event on Ecological Connectivity & Mergus squamatus, was included in the biology exam of middle school in China.

1. The 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP14) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) officially opened on 12 February 2024 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. As the main decision-making forum for the CMS Convention, COP14 brings together governments, scientists and stakeholders to develop strategies for the conservation of migratory species and their habitats. Under the slogan “Nature knows no borders”, the conference reminds people that the migratory journeys of migratory species are transcend political boundaries. Their survival depends on international cooperation, including transboundary, regional and global conservation efforts.

As a partner of the CMS Convention, a delegation from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) travelled to Uzbekistan to participate in the conference and organised two side-events on the following topics New Frontiers for Ecological Connectivity: From Policy to Implementation, Migratory Species and Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON).

Q1:Which of the following measures is best for wildlife conservation?

(A) Hunt wild animals at will to meet personal needs

(B) Destruction of wildlife habitat for urban construction

(C) Establish Community Conservation Area to protect wild animals and their habitats

(D) Introduce a large number of alien species to increase biodiversity

2. Mergus squamatus belongs to the first-class national key protection animal, listed as an endangered species by the IUCN and known as the “Giant Panda of Birds”. It mainly inhabits rivers, lakes or reservoirs with clear water and abundant fish, but the current habitat suitable for their survival has been drastically reduced, resulting in only about 3,000 species remaining in the world. Changbai Mountain is the birthplace of the Songhua, Yalu and Tumen Rivers, and the upper reaches of the Songhua River are the main breeding watershed for the Mergus squamatus, and as autumn begins in September in the Changbai Mountains, the adult Mergus squamatus begin to learn new skills, and practice their flights in preparation for their migration. From late October to mid-November each year, Mergus squamatus migrate from their breeding grounds in the Changbai Mountains to the south to spend the winter. In March of the following year, they migrate back to the Changbai Mountain area to breed.

(1) The Chinese Autumn Sand Duck is a bird of the family Chordata, __, order Goose, family Duckidae, genus Autumn Sand Duck.

(2) Among the behaviours described in the material about the Chinese autumn sand duck, the one that belongs to the congenital behaviour is _____.

(3) The Chinese autumn sand duck needs to consume a large amount of energy during migration, and the characteristic that is not related to energy supply is?

A. streamlined body

B. large food intake and strong ability

C. fast heart rate

D. air sacs to assist lung respiration

(4) According to the material can be known, what is the main reason caused Mergus squamatus in the number of a substantial reduction? Which measure is most effective to protect the species?

Biodiversity is the cornerstone of the Earth’s living system, providing mankind with abundant natural resources, including food, medicine and energy. At the same time, biodiversity also maintains the stability of the ecosystem and plays an irreplaceable role in climate regulation, water conservation and soil maintenance. Incorporating knowledge related to biodiversity conservation into the examination is a positive move, which is conducive to strengthening students’ understanding of and attention to the concept, significance and conservation methods of biodiversity.

Through these examination questions, students can also be guided to think deeply about the issue of biodiversity and realise the urgency and importance of biodiversity conservation. At the same time, this will also promote the importance of biodiversity education in schools and society, and promote the in-depth implementation of biodiversity conservation.
