As an important component of the Earth’s ecosystem, connecting the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere, soil is the material basis for the existence, evolution and development of terrestrial ecosystems. However, drought, desertification and land degradation triggered by climate change and human activities are becoming increasingly acute, affecting the lives and livelihoods of billions of people worldwide.
Current status of land degradation globally：
Widespread land degradation: about 40% of the global land (about more than 2 billion hectares) is degraded, affecting more than 3 billion people.
The rate of degradation is rapid: every second the equivalent of four soccer fields the size of healthy land is degraded, and the total area of land degraded globally reaches 100 million hectares per year.
Initiatives by the United Nations Environment Programme
To address land degradation, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has designated the theme of World Environment Day on June 5, 2024 as “Land restoration, combating desertification and building resilience to drought”. It proposes the following seven ways to restore land and curb drought and desertification:
The Importance of Soil Restoration
Soil restoration projects depend not only on state investment and implementation, but also on broader participation by businesses and the public. Measures such as protecting soil organisms, conserving water, reducing the use of plastics and saving food are all important steps towards sustainable soil use.
