Evaluating Yunqiao Wetland’s Application as a Hub for Conservation and Sustainability | CBCGDF Expert Team on Field Research in Chengdu

In response to an invitation from the Ecological and Environmental Bureau of Pidu District, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, a team led by Dr.Zhou Jinfeng from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) visited the Yunqiao Wetland on April 28, 2023. The team, comprising experts from the Institute of Ecology of the Chinese Academy of Environmental Sciences, the Wetland Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Sichuan University, Chengdu University of Technology, and other institutions, conducted on-site inspections, research, and evaluations regarding the application of Yunqiao Wetland as a “Demonstration Base for Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development.”

Nestled in Yunqiao Village, Pidu District, Yunqiao Wetland is a vital source of potable water for Chengdu, embraced by the Tiao and Xuyan Rivers. Through natural and human interventions, it has blossomed into a vibrant ecosystem, sheltering hundreds of species. Beyond its ecological role, Yunqiao Wetland offers a serene haven for biodiversity, while also serving as an educational hub and recreational retreat. Its tranquil landscapes and diverse flora and fauna epitomize the beauty and resilience of nature, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its wonders and appreciate the delicate balance of life.

This evaluation was conducted in accordance with the requirements of the “Evaluation Index System for Demonstration Bases for Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development,” developed and implemented by the Standards Working Group of CBCGDF. This index system aims to promote the mainstreaming and standardization of biodiversity conservation efforts, advocate for best practices in ecological civilization construction, and serve as an important reference for promoting biodiversity conservation and green development initiatives nationwide.

The visit to Yunqiao Wetland provided an opportunity for experts to assess its ecological significance, biodiversity, and potential for sustainable development. Discussions centered on strategies for enhancing biodiversity conservation, promoting green development practices, and mitigating environmental degradation. Experts meticulously evaluated various factors, including the wetland’s ecosystem services, habitat quality, species diversity, and community engagement initiatives.

Throughout the assessment process, the team emphasized the importance of integrating scientific research, community participation, and policy support to achieve effective conservation outcomes. They underscored the need for collaborative efforts among government agencies, research institutions, local communities, and stakeholders to establish a comprehensive management framework for the sustainable utilization of wetland resources.

The visit concluded with constructive feedback and recommendations for further improvement. Experts commended the efforts of local authorities and stakeholders in preserving the ecological integrity of Yunqiao Wetland while also identifying areas for enhancement, such as strengthening habitat restoration measures, implementing effective monitoring and enforcement mechanisms, and fostering public awareness and participation in conservation activities.
