Zhou Jinfeng: Call for Responsible Tourism during Labor Holidays | Preserving Desert Wonders: Navigating the Challenges of Eco-Friendly Desert Expeditions

As the 2024 Labor Day holiday approaches, preparations for various desert travel activities are underway. It’s heartening to see some initiatives focusing on reducing plastic pollution, yet this effort falls short. The disturbances these activities cause to the desert surface are often overlooked, with far more negative consequences.

Both organizers and participants must be vigilant to observe that everyone tends to choose paths through the desert featuring lichens, crusts, and sparse vegetation for hiking or driving, as they offer speed and safety. However, these areas suffer severe ecological damage after the activities, exacerbating desertification and dust storms.

The protection of desert ecosystems is of paramount importance to humanity. It’s crucial for preventing desertification in northern Chinese cities and reducing sandstorms. Simply planting halophytes like tamarisks cannot solve the problem.

Therefore, there’s a call for organizers and participants to earnestly study relevant knowledge, scientifically plan activities, and minimize their impacts on desert biodiversity and carbon footprint. Let’s strive to minimize the damage to desert ecosystems.
