Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary General of the CBCGDF, invited by the University of Vienna, will deliver online a one-hour speech titled “Biodiversity in China and Beyond: A Journey from Local Communities to Global Initiatives” to students on June 4, 2024.
This keynote lecture, titled “Biodiversity in China and Beyond: A Journey from Local Communities to Global Initiatives“, will be delivered as part of an online series on the Anthropocene epoch. The objective is to provide an impartial examination of biodiversity dynamics, emphasizing the vital role of community involvement and grassroots initiatives, using noteworthy examples from China’s bottom-up conservation efforts to global joint efforts in slowing rapid loss of biodiversity.
Dr. Jinfeng Zhou, the speaker, has been actively engaged in the initial recommendations and subsequent negotiations of the Kunming to Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) since 2018. He will provide us with a comprehensive perspective, using vivid examples to elucidate the Anthropocene and the biodiversity crisis, along with human-centric solutions to address this crisis.
A case in point is the conservation success story of the eastern subspecies of Great Bustards in China. In 2016, facing a significant decline due to threats like poaching, local communities mobilized under the leadership of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF). Through the establishment of the first Community Conservation Area (CCAfa), local volunteers actively engaged in combating poaching, raising awareness, and revitalizing the wintering population from 500 to over 1400.
The CBCGDF’s achievement extends to the establishment of 213 Community Conservation Areas (CCAfas) since 2016. These areas, rooted in local knowledge, exemplify advanced conservation practices through daily patrols, wildlife crime prevention, and protection of endangered species.
This success story sets the stage for the Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON) initiative, which underscores the ongoing efforts and public participation in protecting vulnerable species. BCON encourages biodiversity protection in daily life, emphasizing minimal human disturbance to nature, wildlife protection, and the conservation of natural habitats. As a complement, Community Conservation Areas (CCAfas) facilitate species and ecosystem conservation by empowering communities to protect their natural heritage.
Furthermore, the lecture will delve into BCON’s latest initiative, the “Peoples vs. Plastics” Action launched in April 2023. Over 50 events have been organized to clean up neighborhoods, including rivers, beaches, and farmland, recycling tons of waste, including plastics, cigarette butts, and fishing nets. Additionally, BCON’s Water Safety Program, initiated in 2017, has provided essential water equipment to 142 primary schools and kindergartens in China.
The presentation will illuminate the critical role of community engagement, highlight successful conservation models, and showcase the transformative impact of grassroots initiatives, emphasizing the need for collective action to combat biodiversity loss.
