On May 21, 2024, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation’s Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON) received an invitation to attend a lecture titled “History of US-China National Parks Cooperation” scheduled to take place in Beijing at the end of the month. The event aims to delve into the historical exchanges and future development of cooperation between China and the United States in the field of national parks.
The world’s first national park, Yellowstone National Park, was established in 1872. Since then, the United States has established numerous national parks, including Grand Canyon National Park, Yosemite National Park, Acadia National Park, and Glacier National Park. In the 20th century, the US National Park System experienced rapid growth. In 1916, the US Congress passed the National Park Service Organic Act, establishing the National Park Service (NPS) to manage and protect national parks. As of August 2, 2023, the United States has a total of 63 national parks. These parks encompass various natural landscapes, including mountains, forests, rivers, canyons, deserts, and coastlines. They also protect rich biodiversity and important cultural and historical landmarks.
National parks serve as important repositories for biodiversity conservation and are vital demonstration areas for building ecological civilization, developing responsible tourism, and promoting green economies. In 2015, China issued the “Trial Program for the National Park System,” marking the official launch of China’s national park system construction. In 2021, China welcomed the formal establishment of its first five national parks.
According to the invitation, it is worth noting that as early as the 1980s, national park managers from China and the United States began exchanges and cooperation, overcoming multiple challenges while steadfastly expanding their collaboration. The keynote speaker for this event hails from Yellowstone National Park in the United States and will share insights and experiences on biodiversity conservation.
