Recently, a huge corpse of an unknown creature was discovered on the seaside in Wenchang City, Hainan Province. The body was two meters long, in a state of severe decomposition, making it difficult to identify its specific species. On May 20, 2024, a staff member of the Fishery Affairs Service Center of the Wenchang Municipal Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau said, “Considering that the corpse was severely decomposed and had no further research value, it was treated harmlessly.”
The OceanWetlands editor of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) suggested that for the discovered corpses of such unknown organisms, emergency plans should be quickly carried out and a series of scientific analyzes and tests should be conducted to identify their species. The “rot” of the body is definitely not a problem. Today’s technology has long been able to find valuable materials for research outside the decaying body. It is recommended that the Wenchang local government consider the following approaches when dealing with such problems in the future:
The first step is to fully record the remains and conduct morphological analysis. The second is to conduct genetic analysis.Third, it is recommended to improve emergency plans and information sharing. In addition, they can also cooperate with local scientific research institutions (Hainan is a biodiversity hotspot and scientific research resort), take seriously the information sources provided by such citizen scientists (including the public), promote the establishment of a marine life discovery and research platform, and conduct research on marine biological resources.
