TONG Ying: to Give Children More Opportunities to Learn about Biodiversity | CBCGDF Symposium on Promoting the China National Strategic Action Plan for Biodiversity Conservation

In response to the initiative “Be Part of the Plan” for the 2024 International Day for Biological Diversity issued by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) launched the “Peoples Participation Movements (PPM)” to respond CBD’s call and to support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).

On March 29, 2024, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) hosted the first symposium on “Promoting the National Strategic Action Plan for Biodiversity Conservation ” in Beijing. A total of 32 speakers, including 92 participants from government departments, enterprises, NGOs, academia, indigenous peoples and local communities, and youth representatives, attended the event, with over a hundred people actively responding and signing the Peoples Participation Movements initiative.

Ms. TONG Ying, the initiator of the Youth Innovation and Ecological Station of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) participated in the meeting and gave a keynote speech. She made three suggestions regarding biodiversity conservation:

Firstly, let the ecological area be shared with the people and truly realize the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Children should be exposed to biodiversity more and feel the importance of protecting it. At present, many places have limited opportunities to carry out biodiversity education for young people. In response to the current situation, it is suggested that by establishing natural education bases nationwide, more young people can have the opportunity to participate in biodiversity science education activities.

Secondly, to vigorously build biodiversity experience zones, increase technological and digital support, and establish bases for visualizing and experiencing biodiversity.

Thirdly, government and social resources should lean towards natural education. There are over 1000 national forest parks, ten national parks established in the first batch, hundreds of protected areas, as well as large and small country parks and urban parks in China. Whether these resources can be effectively utilized to allow young people to have a wider exposure to nature requires policy and financial support. By calling for attention, I hope we can truly move towards harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
