ZHOU Jinfeng Talks about the Role of Chinese Bees in Agricultural Cultural Heritage | The 6th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue, Azerbaijan

Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), was invited to attend the 6th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue held on May 1st to 3rd in Baku, Azerbaijan, and deliver a speech in the 4th Plenary Session “Dialogue for Peace and Global Security: Cooperation and Interconnectivity”. In his speech, he talked about the stories of Chinese bees in agricultural cultural heritage and Beijing Swift in ecological connectivity, using vivid cases to propose feasible suggestions and mobilize collective action to protect our cultural heritage from the impact of climate change.

Dr. Zhou first briefly introduced the origin of CBCGDF. Then he shared two cases of biodiversity conservation in the face of climate change, along with the concept of ecological protection interconnectivity. This article shares the case of Chinese bees in agricultural cultural heritage.

Dr. Zhou talked about the value of Chinese bees for human natural habitats. He pointed out that due to industrialization, most beekeepers in China now keep Italian bees instead of Chinese bees. This is because Italian bees allow them to earn more money, which is good for beekeepers. But what would happen if there were no Chinese bees? In spring, the Chinese bee goes out to collect honey one month earlier than the Italian bees, while the Italian bees do not because there are no flowers in early spring of February in Italy. The Chinese bee goes out to pollinate the flowers and plants, without which the flowers and plants cannot bear seeds, and they will not grow flowers and grass next year, leading to a series of problems such as desertification. This, in turn, will have a significant impact on the climate.

The Chinese bee and the ecosystem services they bring have a significant impact on the maintenance, operation, and balance of natural ecosystems. The Chinese bee has undergone long-term evolution and dependence in nature, and its ecological value cannot be replaced by the Italian bee. Everyone knows that all the carbon dioxide we emitted in the past was captured by nature. In ancient times, all carbon dioxide was captured by trees and animals. Therefore, nature is our primary ally in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. But due to the rise of industrial civilization, some valuable heritage has been lost. At present, CBCGDF has established over 200 Community Conservation Areas in China, striving to preserve and protect these heritage sites and biodiversity. Understanding nature and collaborating with it is very important.
