XIAO Wenfa: Biodiversity Conservation Must Keep Pace with the Times | CBCGDF Symposium on Promoting the China National Strategic Action Plan for Biodiversity Conservation

In response to the initiative “Be Part of the Plan” for the 2024 International Day for Biological Diversity issued by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) launched the “Peoples Participation Movements (PPM)” to respond CBD’s call and to support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).

On March 29, 2024, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) hosted the first symposium on “Promoting the National Strategic Action Plan for Biodiversity Conservation ” in Beijing. A total of 32 speakers, including 92 participants from government departments, enterprises, NGOs, academia, indigenous peoples and local communities, and youth representatives, attended the event, with over a hundred people actively responding and signing the Peoples Participation Movements initiative.

Prof. XIAO Wenfa, deputy president of the Chinese Academy of Forestry Sciences, delivered a keynote speech. The main content is as follows:

Biodiversity protection often lags behind the development of the times, but we keep up with the development of the times and must take measures in this area. CBCGDF can also take action in this regard.

We need to carry out special activities. Land use changes, people’s production and lifestyle, awareness of protecting nature, etc. are all changing rapidly, but biodiversity protection is lagging behind, and how to implement the strategic action plan remains to be studied.

It is recommended that CBCGDF can use its advantages to summarize and promote the model of social participation in biodiversity conservation to carry out more work, such as a comprehensive biodiversity conservation model in terms of carbon reduction, pollution reduction, energy conservation, and green development.

I would like to make three suggestions:

First, to strengthen the popularization of science. Scientific and technological innovation and science popularization are the “two wings” of achieving innovative development and should be further valued.

Second, regarding habitat management, China has established a good and large-scale system and plan for protected areas, but when it comes to habitat management, it is not a macro plan, but a specific work on species and their environment. To strengthen and innovate the management model should be an important task in promoting strategies and action plans.

Third, scientific research must be further strengthened. Existing scientific knowledge and scientific data are still relatively fragmented and should be further systematically sorted out and improved in terms of protected species and protected areas to promote the improvement of the biodiversity protection system and the improvement of protection levels.
