CBCGDF Volunteers from Suihua Wetland Conservation Area Carried out Fisheries Protection Operation on Hulan River in Weixing Town, Wangkui County, Suihua City

On April 18th, volunteers from the Suihua Wetland Conservation Area of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) collaborated with the Wangkui County Fisheries Law Enforcement Brigade of Suihua City to carry out a joint Fisheries Protection Operation on the Hulan River. A total of 19 illegal nets were cleared, including 16 cage nets. More than 50 kilograms of catch were rescued.

In order to crack down on illegal fishing and protect the fishery resources and ecological environment of the Hulan River Basin, the fishery administration department of Wangkui County has organized and carried out multiple special campaigns to rectify illegal fishing, and has collaborated with volunteers from the CBCGDF Suihua Wetland Conservation Area to patrol the river and clean up illegal fishing nets.

Due to the lack of dedicated law enforcement vessels, vehicles, etc., law enforcement personnel can only handle illegal fishing issues based on the reported, and have no conditions to carry out cleaning work in the center of the river. The cleaning efforts are insufficient, which has also led to an increasing number of illegal fishing nets of various sizes being deployed in the river.

The deployment of cage nets and other illegal nets not only seriously damages fishery resources, but also threatens various birds that rely on water environment for survival. During the clean-up operation, volunteers discovered a drowned cormorant in a cage net. Cormorants mainly fish by diving, and this cormorant may have unfortunately fallen into a cage during the fishing process, unable to escape in time and died.
