7 Vehicles 34 People, >40kg Fish Saved, 1 pickup’Rubbish | CBCGDF CCAfa (Heilongjiang) & Locals’ Wetlands Action

Since the beginning of spring, volunteers from China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Community Conservation Area for Wetlands at Suihua, Heilongjiang have increased wetland patrols and continued to carry out work to clean up illegal fishing gear.

On the morning of April 11, CBCGDF CCAfa volunteers, with the Fishery Law Enforcement Brigade, Suihua and volunteers from the Wildlife Conservation Association, carried out joint patrols around the Hulan River.

A total of 34 people in 7 vehicles were mobilised to clean up a total of 8 illegal nets, including 3 hanging sub-nets and 5 ground cage nets, and >40kg fish successfully saved. On the way to patrol, the volunteers also picked up rubbish casually discarded on the roadside, and the collected rubbish filled up a pickup.

Many people may not understand why these nets are strictly banned.  These nets, with very small and delicate holes will totally destory fish of all sizes. And no fish could escape! People dependent on fishery will suffer therefore, and the water ecology, fish biodiversity & birds survival will face huge threats, then maybe humanity would be in trouble. So it’s strictly prohibited at the national level to use such nets for illegal fishery, to ensure the fishing resources’ restoration and its sustainable development.

However, there are always someone who takes the risk of fishing illegally with prohibited fishing gears, casually discarding rubbish, livestock carcasses, releasing animals……, resulting in the destruction of fishery resources and environmental pollution, as well as the pollution of water resources. These problems have also plagued the Hulan River for many years.

In order to strengthen the protection of fishery resources and ecological environment in Hulan River, local CBCGDF CCAfa volunteers carry out fishery protection actions all year round, patrolling and cleaning illegal nets almost every day, as well as promoting science to the public. In this way, they are silently guarding Suihua’s lucid waters and lush mountains for future generations.

In safeguarding wetlands and its precious services, each of us matters! Everyone could make a difference for a shared and better future!
