CBCGDF Egret Community Conservation Area in Lanxi County, Zhejiang Province Established

Recently, hundreds of egrets returned to the woods in Muzaotang Village, Youbu Town, Lanxi County, Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province, becoming a local scene.

Around 2013-2014, the villagers saw dozens of egrets flying to the woods next to the fish pond area for the first time in the spring; thousands of egrets came in the spring of the second and third years, and settled down in the woods near the village. Due to the safety protection of the villagers, more and more egrets come to make their home here, reaching 4000-5000 every year. This fish pond area in the village has become the famous local “Egret Site”.

Because the hilly area around the village is at the intersection of two 110kV power grids, line inspectors from the State Grid Jinhua Power Supply Company often come to patrol this area. Starting from 2023, Jinhua Power Supply Company has also joined in the protection of egrets in the village, and has taken the initiative to prepare some simple artificial nests for egrets in the forest to help them settle down. What makes the power supply company more gratified is that shortly after installing simple artificial nests for egrets in 2023, it was discovered that many egrets had actually hatched baby birds in these simple nests. In the past two years, they have simply set up more than 5,000 artificial nests for these egrets in the groves where they live.

Recently, on the basis of the long-term joint protection between State Grid Jinhua Power Supply Company and the village, the Egret Community Conservation Area in Lanxi County, this egret habitat has passed the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Community Conservation Area (CCAfa) System’s review and was officially established as a CBCGDF CCAfa to comprehensively protect the wetland environment that egrets rely on for their survival and breeding. The egret habitat here has become a demonstration site for the harmony between humans and birds and the coexistence of line-birds.
