CBCGDF Green Meeting Index and Carbon Neutral Event

In the context of the international community’s active response to climate change, carbon-neutral events have become an international trend.

Carbon neutrality refers to calculating the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions directly or indirectly produced by enterprises, organizations, or individuals within a certain period. This is followed by implementing afforestation projects to increase carbon sequestration or reduce carbon emissions by purchasing “carbon credits” and investing money from emitters.

These actions offset the greenhouse gases emitted, thereby reducing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The carbon emissions (also called carbon footprint) of an event generally include electricity, gas, transportation, etc.

The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Standard Committee released the Green Meeting Index (GMI) in 2021. These indexes guide and evaluate meeting methods, locations, accommodation, catering, local transportation, energy consumption, paperless initiatives, biodiversity, etc. They advocate for a simple, moderate, green, and low-carbon lifestyle, and oppose luxury, waste, and unreasonable consumption, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of meetings.
