Recently, Yunnan Wenshan Forestry Public Security seized a batch of smuggled pangolin scales and learned from the criminal suspect that these scales were purchased from Vietnamese. China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) immediately contacted Saving Vietnam Wildlife (SVW) expert Thai Nguyen to help identify pangolin scales.
The following is the result of identification sent by Thai Nguyen:
– The small scales in the picture with lots of scales are more likely Sunda Pangolin. It is possible Philippine pangolin, which they have scales that looks the same with the scales of Sunda pangolin.
– The big scales on the picture with two scales can be from Ground Pangolin from Africa or Indian pangolin from India. If you can see any hair that attached to the scales, then it is from Africa, if there is no hair, which can be Indian pangolin.
